The tower was likely the fortification of an inhabited area, traces of which remain in the form of building materials, including bricks and roof tiles. The same sources recount certain events related to the area: between 1150 and 1168, the fief was owned by Count Roberto of Aprutio and was administered on his behalf by Riccardo de Poliano, a descendant of Tancred, Duke of Normandy. Riccardo\u2019s brother, Rhao, was likely responsible for the renovation of the tower.<\/p><p>Based on materials discovered during archaeological excavations, the tower dates back to the early medieval period, as indicated by the presence of ceramics attributable to that era and the absence of evidence of earlier occupation. It appears to have been inhabited until the 13th\u201314th century.<\/p><p>The settlement of Torre Raone underwent a slow decline until, by the late 13th century, it was divided among six owners. It represents our San Zopito, a label dedicated to the Patron Saint of Loreto Aprutino. The miracle of San Zopito &#8220;During the solemn procession behind the relics of Saint Zopito from Penne to Loreto Aprutino, a farmer was working in the fields with his ox. So engrossed in his labor, he paid no attention to the passing procession. The ox, however, left its master\u2019s side, ignoring his calls, and approached the procession, bowing &#8216;solemnly&#8217; in reverence.&#8221; Every year, on the Monday following Pentecost, the historical reenactment is celebrated.Thanks to the municipality of Loreto Aprutino and, above all, to its inhabitants, who pass down a part of our history and culture from generation to generation. History The tower The area where the Tower stands is mentioned in medieval sources that recall the presence of an important early medieval settlement, the Castrum di Podium Rahonis. The tower was likely the fortification of an inhabited area, traces of which remain in the form of building materials, including bricks and roof tiles. The same sources recount certain events related to the area: between 1150 and 1168, the fief was owned by Count Roberto of Aprutio and was administered on his behalf by Riccardo de Poliano, a descendant of Tancred, Duke of Normandy. Riccardo\u2019s brother, Rhao, was likely responsible for the renovation of the tower. Based on materials discovered during archaeological excavations, the tower dates back to the early medieval period, as indicated by the presence of ceramics attributable to that era and the absence of evidence of earlier occupation. It appears to have been inhabited until the 13th\u201314th century. The settlement of Torre Raone underwent a slow decline until, by the late 13th century, it was divided among six owners. In the early 14th century, it was permanently abandoned. The Tower was strategically located on a hillside to oversee the road connecting Penne to Chieti. It likely developed between the 6th and 7th centuries as part of the reorganization of ancient settlements in the area, driven by urgent defensive needs.
